Build it and they will come - how to make a birdhouse

Putting up a wooden birdhouse in your garden is a great way to support your local wildlife. Builder of many of The Green Lab’s projects Jane Horne, of Plain & Simple, explains how.

Read Jane’s construction tips and download the plan below to get started.

  • Always use suitable wood for a safe and long-lasting birdhouse. Any good, solid, untreated wood is generally the best construction material. Macrocarpa, cedar or pine are particularly easy to work with and weather well.  Marine Plywood is also safe to use. Wood should ideally be 15mm thick for warmth.
  • Use galvanised or stainless steel nails or screws as they last longer than ordinary nails.
  • Add ventilation to avoid a build-up of moisture. Small drainage holes in the base are essential to let liquid waste drain away or in open front boxes to let any rainwater drain away.
  • Don’t add a perch – predators may intimidate the nestlings and force the adult birds to leave.
  • Put the hole at the top of the box to keep the young out of reach of cats.
  • Don’t paint the box. A coat of linseed oil will stop the wood drying out but is not essential. Some wood preservatives are poisonous and are best avoided.
  • A hinged roof allows you to clean the box easily after each breeding season. Also make sure it is fastened securely to stop rats, possums and cats raiding the nest. This can be as simple as a small screw that can be easily unscrewed for cleaning.
  • Make it watertight so that rainwater doesn’t leak in.

When and Where to Hang

  • Hang your bird house at any time of the year.
  • Choose a sheltered position away from prevailing wind and direct sunlight.
  • Place high up to reduce risk from predators.
  • Make sure the bird house is firmly secured to a tree, wall or fence using galvanised screws.
